MMA Madness' Muscular Mailbag of Menace and Mayhem (part 2)

1. Who wins on June 1st, Urijah or Jens?
-Jared Gerrard from Asheville, NC

I love Jens Pulver, but it's gotta be Urijah. Urijah is younger, stronger, and quicker. Jens has that big finish potential (see his victory over Cub Swanson for proof), but unless Urijah makes a mistake that opens up that big play opportunity, it'll be a safe and convincing victory for Faber. Think GSP-Serra 2 with lighter guys: as long as Faber is careful, he can execute his game plan without leaving himself open. Although, like GSP-Serra 1, anything could happen.

2. The upcoming Affliction pay per view looks very interesting. Do you think that a card like this could ever compete with a UFC card?
-Austin Harper from Knoxville, TN

No, and for a few reasons. First, I don't think any of these organizations (even EliteXC) will truly compete with the UFC. Will they make money? Will they continue to put on shows? Probably. But they don't have the name recognition (UFC is to MMA as NFL is to football) to truly make strides against the premiere organization Second, Affliction won't be able to transition from clothing company to fighting organization. They've already shown booking troubles, which means that live gate troubles aren't far behind.

3. Who should GSP fight next?
-Jimmy Jablonski from Washington D.C.

Come on, Jimmy! A quick look through MMA Madness archives would tell you that GSP will fight Jon Fitch next, although St. Pierre has suggested it won't happen for six months. After that, it was supposed to be Thiago Alves, but with an upcoming fight against Matt Hughes, all bets are off for his title shot. He'll get Fitch for sure, but after that, it's tough to tell.

4. Where do you see MMA in 10 years?
-Edwin Spivey from Ann Arbor, MI

Huge, baby, HUGE! And I'm not just saying that because the rent money depends on it. This is it -- this is the sport that America (and the world) have craved for years. It's fast, it's exciting, it's got athletes in prime conditioning, and it's got violence. MMA is like a movie and sport all wrapped up in one. I see many organizations, far more than we have now -- but the UFC will still be on top. As far as champions are concerned, let me predict what 5 years from now will look like: Vera (HW), Evans (LHW), Maia (MW), Koscheck (WW), Diaz (LW), Faber (FW). That's right! The UFC will add a 145 lb. division in the next five years, you heard it here first.

5. We all see that combat sports are very violent, however which is safer, MMA or boxing?
-Nathan Allison from Greenwich, CT

Despite recent MMA-related deaths, boxing is far more dangerous, averaging eleven deaths per year. During a typical boxing match, each fighter is guaranteed to be hit in the head hundreds of times. In MMA, fights can end without a punch being thrown.

Do you honestly think Tim Sylvia has any chance against the beast from the east Fedor. Would you want to fight him ?

Tim always has a chance, with his awkward style, insane heart (i.e. Frank Mir fight. I challenge anyone to find 5 guys that have not tapped with a lock like that), and championship pedigree--people who are writing off Sylvia are crazy. With that said, Fedor by TKO round 2. Still should be a great fight. It's nice to see Fedor in there with some top competition again.

And for the record, forget Fedor, I wouldn't want to fight Blake Bowman. Professional fighters are just that, professional. I don't think it matters what we as writers or fans would do or wouldn't do. 9/10 we are getting the s*

This reminds me of a great Sherdog thread that asked which fighters do you think you could beat. I answer: if I got a good shot in, James Thompson/Marvin Eastman. Also, I can't stand Chris Leben so I'll put him on there too. I just like the idea of beating him.

Leben can take a punch, though...give him credit. Also, Fedor will KILL Sylvia...that's the prediction from the great prognosticator...which means I can predict fights and doesn't have anything to do with my prostate.
