MMA Madness Roundtable Discussion: What MMA fight would you use to introduce someone new to the sport?

Periodically, MMA Madness will ask its writers to consider a question and to write a short response to that question. It's a feature we call the "MMA Madness Roundtable Discussion." This week's question is: What MMA fight would you use to introduce someone new to the sport?

What follows are responses from some of our writers:

Rami Genauer's pick: Carlos Newton vs. Kazushi Sakuraba (PRIDE 3)

It has to be a ground battle. It's easy to explain that MMA involves punches, kicks, elbows, and knees. Everyone can understand the concept of striking. But the ground game has to be seen to be appreciated. And there's no better example of the strategy, technique, and grace of ground fighting than Newton vs. Sakuraba. From Newton's multiple escapes to Sakuraba's slick kneebar that eventually ends it, it would take a serious naysayer (or a really insecure homophobe) to watch that and not want to see more. That's when you lay Newton vs. Pele on them and you've got a fan for life.

Bonus: The post-fight show of respect between Newton and Sakuraba is among the most sincere and gracious I've ever seen.

Jeff Hamlin's pick: Forrest Griffin vs. Stephen Bonnar (TUF 1 Finale)

This may be an easy answer, but I would choose the light heavyweight finals of The Ultimate Fighter Season One Finale. Certainly, there are better cards. And neither Forrest Griffin or Stephen Bonnar -- who competed in that fight -- are likely to win a UFC championship anytime soon. Yet that fight may be the most important fight in the history of UFC. The bout was a tremendous slugfest, though it wasn't a technical classic by any means. But, it was a launching pad for UFC's business model. It drew a 1.9 TV rating, which was considered impressive at the time, especially because it was UFC’s first live non-PPV special. Plus, there were plenty of disgruntled pro wrestling fans who were tired of WWE and wanted another outlet for entertainment. I'll bet many of them became UFC fans that night.

Luke Thomas' pick: Diego Sanchez vs. Karo Parisyan (UFC Fight Night 6)

This fight can be described in three words: bell to bell. For three 5-minute rounds the action was nonstop, bell to bell.

This contest featured two elite welterweights jockeying for position atop the incredibly talent-rich UFC division. What made it so special was just how even the match-up was, not just in terms of overall talent, but in fighting styles. Both "Nightmare" and "The Heat" are notorious for their unrelenting aggression and ability to push the pace of a fight at breakneck speed. In this sport, that type of attitude and fighting style has a way of breaking an opponent's will. So when one fight features two fighters whose trademark is overwhelming their opposition, you had to know it was going to be exciting.

The fight featured everything you could hope for in a MMA match: fast action, heart and perseverance, fluid grappling, heavy-handed striking, exciting takedowns, expert technique in nearly every facet of the MMA game, and most importantly, control of the fight going back and forth. Sanchez vs. Parisyan personifies the term "mixed martial arts". It's a must-see for hard-core and casual fans alike.
