FIGHTMETRIC - Griffin vs. Jackson

Courtesy of a post by, JonyTitelipz, one of our site's regulars, and a prolific poster, I've spent some time at a Fightmetric.com this afternoon.

I did not visit Fightmetric.com just because I wanted Rampage to win, and thought he at least eeked out a draw. More because I have enjoyed the healthy disagreements and dialogue that this fight has led to here on Madness, and want to see what some other "experts" had to say.

I have always been impressed with how Fightmetric analyzes and scores fights. Here's an excerpt about how they arrive at their conclusions,

"The FightMetric system is based on qualitative and quantitative research into the things that matter most in ending a fight. Its algorithm is based on historical fight data..."

I encourage all of you, whether you agree with my assesment of the fight or not, to visit, http://fightmetric.com/fights/Griffin-Rampage.html. It is at the very least an admirable attempt at an objective, scientific analysis of a very controversial fight.

For those of you who just want the summarized version, here it is. Fightmetric's analysis using the ten point must system leads them to a 47-47 draw. Fightmetric's analysis using their own total point system leads them to a score of 299-277, Jackson.

This will likely be the last story that I post about the scoring and results of this fight. I want to end it with a heartfelt and sincere congratulations to Forrest Griffin, because no matter what I, or Fightmetric, or others may think, he IS the LHW Champion!

I thought it was a draw. IMO you have to clearly beat the current champ to take his belt. Like Randy did against Tito and Timmeh, Chuck did to Randy, or Serra did to GSP.

I think that Forrest outworked him...leg or no leg, that's the breaks. (IMO) I also think that Rampage now needs to beat another top contender to get another shot...

You know this kind of controversy is nothing knew in combat sports. I remember in 1987,
Suger Ray Leonard won a disputed decision over Marvelous Marvin Hagler and to this day
people are split 50-50 over who they think won that fight. The same "You have to beat the champ decisively to win the title"came up then too. The bottom line then was the same thing
Leonard like Griffin wasn't suppose to stand a chance in Hell of winning the fight and not only were they supposedly not going to win the fight, they weren't going to even win one minute of one round because they were going to get steam-rolled so bad but in both cases but the underdogs were able to hang in and actually mount attacks of their own, making the fight that they supposedly had no business winning as close as it could get. So in each case David got the nod over Goliath from the judges maybe because both Goliaths predicted highlight reel early knockouts that never materialized. And so the controversy will live on probably forever..................................

After this, I'm done. That's BS that you have to "decisively beat" the champ. You have to be the better fighter in that fight. Griffin won the fight. If it were a regular fight, Griffin would have won. No questions asked. There are no special rules for scoring a championship fight. Joe Rogan himself had Griffin winning after the fourth round. I'm take his word any day.
