A. Silva Approaches Consecutive Wins Milestone

FightMatrix has the great piece on why Anderson Silva may very well be making a case for the greatest fighter of all time. The Spider has won seven in a row, one behind Jon Fitch and Royce Gracie, tied with eight. Of course, this is just for the UFC. Fedor won eight straight and then six straight in PRIDE, divided only by a No Contest. At any rate, here's the piece:

With his 61-second knockout of James Irvin, Anderson Silva made a successful transition to 205 lbs, and also achieved something that very few fighters have done before him: seven consecutive victories in UFC bouts. Every single one of Silva's seven UFC fights has been the main event, and every time he put his opponent away in under two rounds.

The record for most consecutive wins in the UFC is currently shared by Royce Gracie and Jon Fitch, at eight victories in a row each. Fitch's streak is still active, however he will have to defeat the seemingly unstoppable Georges St. Pierre to pull ahead of Gracie. Should Fitch lose, Anderson Silva stands an excellent chance of achieving the record nine wins in his next two bouts.

The only other UFC fighter to hold seven consecutive Octagon wins is Chuck Liddell, who has accomplished it on two separate occasions. Former champions Randy Couture, Rich Franklin, and Pat Miletich have all won seven straight UFC bouts as well, but suffered losses in other organizations within the same time frame.

Is he the Greatest Of All Time? You decide.

I think Royce did it at a time when the open weight made it so much harder. He relied on nothing more than skill. I take nothing away from Silva, but Royce was the MAN.

I don't know, JST. On one hand, Royce would fight three times in a night...definitely tough. But look who he was facing...Art Jimmerson? He didn't have a real test until he hit Dan Severn at UFC 4. Meanwhile, Anderson's SECOND fight was for the title against arguably the second best middleweight champ the organization has ever seen.

I think it's going to be a long time before someone beats the spider.

Yeah Ben, you have an awesome point. However, think about this: if Royce lost, the point of GJJ being the better martial art would have been stumped against a "lesser" apponent. That was a lot of pressure. You remember Royce vs Kimo? There is a reason Royce did NOT fight in the finals. I honestly don't think Silva has to face that type of pressure, but nevertheless his pressure has not gone unknowtice. Great Post!
