Gary Shaw Contradicts EliteXC, ''We're looking for a stand-up fight''

Cage Today has the news that :

EliteXC consultant Gary Shaw adds some more fuel to the EliteXC fight fixing fire, contradicting EliteXC’s Head Of Operations Jeremy Lappan and his own son Jared “$kala” Shaw in a recent interview with the LA Times.

Elite XC consultant Gary Shaw said he wouldn’t hesitate to “go to a fighter and say, ‘We’re looking for a stand-up fight.’ You’re not asking him to throw a fight. You’re talking about a fan-friendly fight, not about protecting Kimbo.”

Shaw said he has urged MMA fighters in the past to maximize the action, to avoid an abundance of yawn-inspiring wrestling.

“Do I think that’s unethical? No,” Shaw said. “Because in MMA, you get bonus money for a knockout. I don’t see it as unethical . . . asking him to be TV and fan friendly.”

That's straight up BULLSHIT!!! I don't care how nice or good of a guy Shaw is...he doesn't belong anywhere near the operations of an MMA Company...you can't dictate this shit...he's a boxing promoter alright!

Have to agree with Cota. The whole concept of "mixed martial arts" is allowing a fighter to use what the opponent gives him in seeking to take him out, whether it's stand up, ground and pound, or submission. Many fans obviously favor the quick standing knockout, hence the popularity of guys like Chuck Liddell, but I think real harcore fans appreciate all aspects of the game, and a promoter has no place in suggesting or dictating how a fight should go. I can understand it, but I don't agree with it, as virtually every event has idiotic "boo-birds" in the audience who start booing when fights go to the ground, but for me, that's where the real action is. I don't necessarily want to see nine minutes of two guys standing against the cage in a stalemate, but personally I love to watch good submission fighters like Royce in the old days, or a guy like Frank Mir taking out a monster like Brock Lesnar.

HEY! Isn't Gary saying exactly what I thought was the issue? He wasn't asking anyone to throw the fight, just make it more exciting by giving the public a KO. However, like you both wrote, that's not MMA, and not why I watch MMA. As a matter of fact, I HATE watching Best KOs because it's rare that a great fighters get's KOed like that of one less prepared.

Obviously that's what happened to Kimbo.

why is people saying he is only trying to make it exiting for us the fans,bullshit!he was doing it for himself and kimbo,he done it with the ref yelling at him not to stop the fight when thompson was smashing him and shouted at the ref again last week,doesn't matter aslong as you get to watch it free,dont think he would get away with it if you had to pay ppv.

This makes Shaw sound a bit inexperienced in the MMA world. The truth is, a knockout is the most shocking ending to a fight, so YES fans like to see those. A crafty triangle choke or armbar is pretty damn sick to watch too. What about two guys grappling the hell outta eachother, going for sub attempt after sub attempt, etc (i.e. Karo Parisyan vs Nick Diaz or Karo vs. Diego).....to me that stuff is exciting as hell too......why, as a circuit does XC wanna encourage their fighters to box, when there are so many other facets of the sport that are killer to see. IMO, it shows XC's immaturity...."get out there and keep it standing for the fans!!!!" ---- that's stupid. If i'm Demian Maia, ur gonna find urself wrapped up like an anaconda, and SCREW the boxing. XC's promo should be, "let's keep this fight moving and exciting". Then I forget, they had Kimbo ------ there was no other option...psht

JSTR808: Funny shit.....well, mma facts and knowledge are mma facts and knowledge. There's really no two ways about it. Just means that we've obviously been into MMA enough to where the level of clarity, as to addressing issues and opinions of the sport, seem to be a tad more clear. Hell, it's either that, or unintentionally i write such long responses that the bullshit begins to sound halfway logical --- possibly due to the reader of my posts going, "damn, that's long.....sure I, suppose.....whatever". On a serious note, I hope that's not the case. I like and watch the sport so much that I can talk about this shit all day.....Exchanging with the likes of u, MMAredcoat, raging bull, mu shin, jcota, (to name a few) and all y'all fools out there that like this sport, is what makes it that much more fun......When I say exchange "like this", I'm speaking in regards to the level of knowledge that our members seem to have. U can get into a good hardfought discussion (some may ask why, but I say....why not) on this site, and end up coming to a common agreement, cuz occassionally you both learned something new. Anyways, this shit's a hobby of mine, and it's only a hobby of mine, cuz i've got TRUE MMA FANS to discuss it all with. (man, was that off the subject or what????)
